Ostiense this morning

We had a tour in our Roman cultural class today through the Ostiense neighborhood in Rome. It is just east and south of my flat on Trastevere and is currently under city reconstruction due to the large amount of industry that has left the area. New housing projects and mixed used buildings (businesses and housing together so the people immediately have services) are springing up everywhere or being renovated. Ostiense is really a unique place that will be the face of modern Rome.

Be prepared for a museum post later today... (Probably when all of you wake up for today.) It is a really good one well worth a trip to Rome!

Gate in the old wall of Rome

Il Pyramide monument on the wall

That is a big wall, and it goes on and on.

An original Roman highway

The new highway.

This is typical Italian driving.

Fish market! Really stinky but really cool!

Remains of industry from the turn of the last century.

Graffiti including American cult icons and current politicians (Berlusconi and Obama are not well liked in Italy)

Quite a romantic view of the old gas towers...

El Pyramide on the walk back. It sort of dominates the area for some reason.

This is an art deco knock off of a Renaissance design style. I personally like it, but it is really an oddity that Art Deco style appears in Rome.

A building built during the Fascist Era. Lots of really unique and streamlined buildings were built then, and it is a really interesting take on a mix of modernism, art deco and a new take on Neo-Classical design.
